Ministry Of Health And Prevention Holds Workshop On Development Of National Health Nutrition Strategy

Program held in collaboration with World Health Organization

UAE, November 30, 2016 - The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) has recently organized a workshop themed ‘Developing and Formulating a National Nutrition Strategy’ in collaboration with the World Health Organization. The workshop led by Dr. Hussein Abdel-Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary of MOHAP’s Health Centers and Clinics, aims to improve nutrition among the various age groups in the UAE in line with the global nutrition policy.

Dr. Al Rand opened the workshop in the presence of government health specialists on food and nutrition, other health authorities, educational institutions, universities and municipalities. Abu Dhabi’s Punitive and Correctional Establishment as well as the Juvenile Care Center also participated in the program.

The Assistant Undersecretary highlighted the importance of formulating a national strategy for nutrition to establish a healthy food culture and system among the population and develop long-term solutions to health challenges involving nutrition. This includes the promotion of healthy eating habits and physical activities in order to adopt a healthy lifestyle, in line with MOHAP’s programs for promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing the prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.

Latifa Mohammed Rashid, Head of the Nutrition Department at MOHAP’s Health Centers and Clinics Sector, noted that the workshop was held to address the following: improving nutrition across all age groups nationwide; creating a national nutrition strategy based on a healthy diet and reduced consumption of salt, fat and sugar; and reviewing all initiatives for reducing the rate of obesity and non-communicable diseases. She also moderated the discussion on the development of a national strategic plan for nutrition.
