DEERFIELD, Ill., April 6, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Sunday, April 17, 2016, the North Shore community will join together to raise awareness and research funds for the fight against lung cancer at LUNGevity’s 5th annual Breathe Deep North Shore 5K fun run, 2-mile walk, and balloon launch at Deerfield High School.
The Foundation anticipates over 1,500 participants and has already raised over $160,000. Event organizers hope to surpass the 5-year fundraising total of one million dollars, uniting the North Shore community against the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. The event is one of 40 walks nationwide benefitting LUNGevity Foundation, the nation’s leading lung cancer-focused nonprofit.
Open to all ages, participants may register online at www.LUNGevity.org/northshore until Friday, April 15, at 2 p.m., or on-site at the event beginning at 8:45 a.m. The event will feature music from HYPE Productions and visits from mascots Southpaw from the Chicago White Sox (9:15 10:15 a.m.) and Sparky from the Chicago Fire (9:30-10:30 a.m.). Participants will also have the opportunity to enjoy massages, a photo booth, free food and drinks, games for kids, and more.
Program speakers include Michael J. Liptay, M.D., Head of Thoracic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center, and William E. Fitzsimmons, Executive Vice President at Northbrook-based Astellas Pharma. Lung cancer survivors will count down to the release of 300 balloons covered with handwritten names and messages of remembrance and hope to start the walk.
