NEW YORK, June 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- According to Kalorama Information, the promise of next generation sequencing (NGS) DNA sequencing in which reactions are performed in a massively parallel fashion, making it possible to sequence large stretches of DNA continues to attract many companies, researchers, and investors. The healthcare market research company has noted that over 100 firms are vying for share in the market for sample preparation for next generation sequencing, which reached $415 million in 2015. The firm’s report, The Market for Sample Preparation for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), focuses on the market for NGS sample preparation products, which includes the hardware and consumables.

“Given the potential market opportunity and the low barriers to entry for NGS sample preparation products, the interest is not surprising,” said Bruce Carlson, Publisher of Kalorama Information. “Each application tends to have many companies offering products, which is creating increased competition.”
The introduction of systems such as Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Ion Torrent PGM and Proton and Illumina’s MiSeq and MiniSeq have changed the situation in the market, but now their effects seem to have become clear for the time being. Dozens of companies are at work developing new sequencer technologies to replace the current generation, including the leading sequencer suppliers. It is inevitable that something revolutionary will again cause rapid changes in the market, but the timing and source are unknown. In the meantime, Illumina, Agilent Technologies, and Thermo Fisher Scientific are among the leaders in the market:
- Illumina’s HiSeq systems have been dominating the market for the last few years. In January of this year Illumina introduced the new MiniSeq System, a benchtop sequencer providing push-button operation, making sequencing easier to perform and less expensive. As there has been an uptick in the introductions of automated systems across the range of sample preparation areas, the company launched the NeoPrep Library Prep System, which performs library prep, quantification and normalization, in a single, self-contained instrument in February 2015. The number of Illumina systems installations is creeping towards 10,000 perhaps in the next two or three years and this huge demand for consumables is attracting an abundance of suppliers. The usage of NGS in diagnostics and clinical research has continued to move beyond early adopters, trend-setters, and the like into more typical labs, with Illumina reporting 40% to 50% growth in particular areas such as clinical oncology. The company has also been active in acquisitions, purchasing Conexio Genomics, GenoLogics Life Sciences Software, and Myraqa.
- Agilent Technologies is a leader in the market due to its sustained success in a variety of product areas. The firm has several different types of products that address key areas of the library preparation and target enrichment market, and its success in these areas has made it a leading company in the segment despite not being a supplier of sequencers. Agilent’s SureSelect products for target enrichment are highly regarded by the end-users. The company’s 2100 Bioanalyzer and associated electrophoresis chips are widely used for the sizing, quantitation and quality control of DNA and RNA prior to next-generation sequencing. Agilent has been primarily involved with target enrichment products and library quantitation, but it has been making deals and positioning itself to move downstream into sequencing itself. Specifically, Agilent has stated that its strategy is aimed at clinical sequencing.
- Thermo Fisher Scientific became a major player in the sequencer market through its acquisition in 2013 of Life Technologies, offering a large variety of hardware, consumables and other products for NGS sample preparation applications that provide great potential. Thermo/ Life Technologies has experienced respectable adoption of its Ion Torrent systems and has introduced new versions of its Ion Torrent sequencer, the S5 and S5 XL. Thermo has also made several recent deals that could boost its competitiveness in NGS. These include acquisitions such as Affymetrix, Alfa Aesar, and One Lambda, and collaborations including CompanionDx, GlaxoSmithKline, Invivoscribe, Lucigen, Novartis, Pfizer, and Premaitha.
The Market for Sample Preparation for Next Generation Sequencing focuses on the market for NGS sample preparation products. The report discusses trends, challenges, strategies, companies, and products, and provides estimates of market share and revenue growth for the market, including NGS sample preparation revenues and growth rate, 2015-2020; revenues by region, 2015 (North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, rest-of-world); revenues by product type, 2015 (enrichment, library prep kits, panels, etc.; automation/ hardware; nucleic acid extraction); and NGS sample preparation leading company revenues and market shares, 2015. The competitive situation, deals, and litigation are also covered in respective chapters.
