Mr. Sweeney has been founder and CEO of eight healthcare service companies including Bridge Medical, the pioneer of bedside barcode scanning for medication administration, and CardioNet (BEAT), the highly successful developer and marketer of Mobile Cardiac Outpatient Telemetry, a technology and service that allows physicians to continuously monitor cardiac activity as patients go about their normal daily activities.
While Mr. Sweeney was Chairman and CEO of Bridge Medical, the company produced “Beyond Blame,” an award-winning documentary - highlighting medication administration process flows, their root causes and the human consequences of these errors on patients, families, and caregivers.
A new vision: Constantly evolving, patient-centered, actionable intelligence
Mr. Sweeney has been involved in and started many companies that have permanently changed the way healthcare is delivered. With Caremark, he is credited with founding the home IV therapy industry that made it possible for patients to receive intravenous therapy at home rather than in the hospital. Another venture, CarePartners, pioneered early discharge and family support services for premature infants. In his most recent success, Mr. Sweeney’s CardioNet technology has been proven three times more effective than conventional monitoring in identifying potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias.
“I think there is a common theme in these ventures,” Mr. Sweeney said. “By focusing on patient needs, by seeing healthcare through the patient’s eyes, you can use technology to support changes that improve outcomes and reduce costs. IntelliDOT has made major contributions to patient safety with its systems -- more than 30 million medications safely administered while stopping more than 700,000 potentially fatal medication errors. I see the technology as the seed from which we can grow other wireless solutions that will be of tremendous help to patients and caregivers.
“The key to creating a better, more efficient, more socially affordable healthcare system is information,” Mr. Sweeney said. “With wireless technology and a deep understanding of the human needs of all participants--patients, caregivers, payors and scientists--we can use clinical and business information to transform the way care is delivered. That will be our primary goal.”
“Jim has a remarkable track record,” said Dick Allen, IntelliDOT Director. “He has started eight product and service companies, took three companies public, raised billions of dollars in financing, and was responsible for some remarkable returns for investors. Most importantly, he has the vision to help IntelliDOT achieve its full potential. We are delighted to have him with us.”
Thomas Klopack, who led IntelliDOT for the past three years, will be leaving the company, working with Mr. Sweeney and management during the transition period. Under Mr. Klopack’s leadership, IntelliDOT has grown from an early stage R& D organization to a commercial enterprise that has launched five point-of-care solutions, with systems installed in more than 60 client hospitals and a superb reputation for customer support. Mr. Klopack has the sincere thanks of everyone at IntelliDOT for his many contributions.
IntelliDOT is expanding its view of patient safety to address additional areas where it can support optimal error-free bedside decision-making by clinicians. Building on the cornerstone of installed IntelliDOT accounts and its record of five star customer service, the company will develop new products to enhance the value of its wireless, handheld hardware platform.
“Patient safety remains at the heart of our systems; it is the first requirement for quality patient care. We believe the wireless, handheld technology infrastructure used for bedside barcode scanning can be enhanced and evolved to help clinicians measurably improve patient outcomes, as well as to prevent errors. Our technology can help hospitals operate more efficiently and reduce operational costs,” said Mr. Sweeney. “Our expanded vision includes the contributions we can make to optimal, more affordable patient care.”
