LAS VEGAS, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- IPC, the nation’s premier hospitalist company, has expanded its practice into Las Vegas, Nevada, and has begun serving inpatients at two medical centers within that community. Concurrently, the company announced the appointment of Steven Peterson, MHA, as executive director in the market.
Hospitalists are physicians who work in close consultation with the primary care physician and appropriate specialists to manage a patient’s entire hospital experience from time of admission until discharge. As the fastest-growing medical specialty in the country, hospitalists have been shown to increase the quality of care and reduce healthcare costs while providing patients the added comfort and security of having a physician on-site to oversee care, answer questions and ensure the smooth coordination of all hospital services.
“Las Vegas is one of the fastest-growing markets in the country, and one of its challenges is making sure that it has a healthcare infrastructure in place capable of responding to this incredible growth,” said IPC President Jeff Taylor. “The community’s expansion, combined with the important services and track record we bring, makes Las Vegas an extremely attractive opportunity for growth for IPC.”
Currently IPC is seeing patients at two St. Rose Dominican Hospitals -- the Rose de Lima and Siena campuses. Lead physician at these practices is Carolyn Matzinger, M.D., a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and recognized by America’s Registry of Outstanding Professionals for 2003-04.
Peterson brings to IPC three decades of experience in healthcare operations. He has held senior management positions in several hospitals including serving as chief executive officer at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas from 1988-1994. In addition, Peterson worked for a large managed care organization and national EMS provider in Las Vegas and during the course of his career worked closely with physicians in negotiating various acquisitions/sales of medical practices in Arizona, Texas and Nevada. He holds an undergraduate degree in nuclear medicine technology and a master’s degree in hospital administration, both from the Indiana University School of Medicine.
“I am thrilled to be joining the nation’s largest and most successful hospitalist company and look forward to helping build a successful practice in the city I have been a part of for so long,” said Peterson. “Hospitalists have become true drivers of the delivery system; and I am confident that patients, physicians and the healthcare industry as a whole will benefit greatly from IPC’s presence in Las Vegas.”
Founded in 1995, IPC employs approximately 300 physicians nationwide and manages more than $1 billion in healthcare expenditures annually. In addition to Las Vegas, IPC has practice locations in California’s Bay Area, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Fort Worth, Houston, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, San Antonio, St. Louis and Tucson. The company also has a consulting services division that helps hospitals and other healthcare organizations launch new hospitalist programs or enhance existing ones.
