GlobalData Release: Live Fast, Die Young: Russia’s Population Set to Plummet

LONDON, UK (GlobalData), 25 June 2012 - A perilously high mortality to birth rate will cause the population of Russia to drop dramatically by 30% within the next forty years, predicts the latest report by intelligence analysts GlobalData. The report* cites a high rate of alcoholism, road accidents, drug use and sexually transmitted diseases as the key factors behind its worrying forecast.

In 2010, the huge Eastern European nation was ranked ninth in the world in terms of population, with a total number of 142.9 million citizens. But with a short life expectancy and numerous social problems, Russia has a mortality rate 1.5 times higher than the EU average.

This demographic crisis is not a new problem, however. Russia’s population has been in decline since the collapse of the Soviet Union in late 1991, with 2009 figures showing a decrease of 7 million people.

According to GlobalData’s 2010 figures, the average life expectancy for Russian men is 62.8 – approximately 15 years less than in other developed countries. For women the number climbs to 74.8, but this is still seven years less than financially comparable nations.

This predicament represents a major problem for Putin’s aspirations of re-establishing Russia as pre-eminent economic powerhouse. Following the financial crash of 2009, the country exhibited greater resilience than the Euro zone and became the sixth largest economy in 2011. The Russian president has announced an ambition to break into the top five within the next few years by boosting the annual GDP growth by 6%-7% and increasing GDP per capita by 50% over the next decade.

Of the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India and China), the former Soviet state is conspicuous in its waning populace. While counterparts continue to expand both economically and demographically, Russia’s citizenry is diminishing at an alarming rate and causing a headache for the country’s policy makers.
