MINNEAPOLIS, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Medical Alley announced today that Dr. Joseph Smith, Senior VP and Chief Medical Officer of Guidant CRM, will deliver one of the four keynote speeches at the Medical Alley MedEdge(TM) International Conference to be held June 23-25 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Dr. Smith’s speech will focus on how the medical device industry, with its many successes in providing intelligent, responsive, site-specific therapy, is well poised to be the enabling technology for the pending bioscience revolution.

Before joining Guidant, Dr. Smith was director of the Arrhythmia Institute and research director of the Cardiovascular Group, both in Fairfax, VA. Dr. Smith served for more than seven years on the Guidant - CRM Medical Advisory Board before assuming his current role.
Dr. Smith holds an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering (EE) from Johns Hopkins University, a Master’s degree in EE from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a PhD in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics from the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, and an MD from Harvard Medical School. He completed his medical internship and residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and completed his cardiology and clinical electrophysiology training at Brigham and Women’s hospital, the Krannert Institute of Cardiology in Indianapolis, and Washington University in St. Louis. He has held academic positions at the School of Medicine and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis.
