Cytonome/ST, LLC Announces High-Speed Rare Event Detection Milestone

BOSTON, Oct. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Cytonome/ST, LLC, a developer and manufacturer of advanced cell cytometry and sorting systems, today announced a milestone in the high-speed detection of rare events. Cytonome/ST researchers have demonstrated robust identification of extremely rare target particles. Using Cytonome/ST’s existing parallel detection technology and cross contamination-free sample system, the researchers were able to reliably identify 60 fluorescent target particles within a sample of 640 million non-fluorescent particles (corresponding to the identification of one target particle in 10 million total particles) in less than 1 hour.

Cytonome/ST’s main technology is based on a microfluidic chip that provides increased throughput over conventional flow cytometers by splitting the fluid path into parallel flow channels. “This parallel technology may be useful in studies where reliable measurements of extremely rare target populations are important,” stated John Sharpe, Ph.D., Cytonome/ST’s CEO. “We have capitalized on the very high throughput of our system to demonstrate the direct detection of very rare particles. Such detection capabilities could be of value to the research, diagnostic and clinical flow cytometry communities,” added Dr. Sharpe.

Cytonome/ST, LLC, headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, is developing a high-speed cell sorter for use in clinical, diagnostic and scientific research applications. Cytonome/ST’s platform combines an ultra-high throughput, optical cell sorting instrument with a sterile, microfluidics-based, single use disposable component.
