Sponsored by Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, the Harold Rifkin Award honors individual outstanding service in the cause of diabetes that has been performed with an international perspective and with international impact. Dr. Mogensen will be recognized with this honor at the Association’s 75th Scientific Sessions® taking place June 5-9, 2015, at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston.
Currently Professor Emeritus of Medicine, Aarhus University Hospital, Aarhus, Denmark, Dr. Mogensen’s career is distinguished for extensive studies of microalbuminuria, which led to a new classification of kidney disease in diabetes. Known internationally for his contributions at the interface between clinical science and physiology, his studies revealed for the first time that microalbuminuria predicts overt renal disease and, in type 2 diabetes, predicts early mortality. His efforts influenced changes in clinical practice across the globe by demonstrating that antihypertensive therapy could delay, and possibly prevent, the loss of kidney function.
Indicating his significant contributions to the field, Dr. Mogensen’s nearly 500 publications have been cited more than 30,500 times with an h-index of 82. Dr. Mogensen has delivered nearly 200 invited lectures across the world and has provided a lifetime of service to numerous international diabetes-related organizations, including the American Diabetes Association, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, and the International Society of Nephrology.
