PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 27, 2015 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Calmar Laser, Inc. (Palo Alto, CA) today announced plans to introduce two new models of its Cazadero family of fiber-based femtosecond laser products at the Photonics West Exhibition, held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco from February 7-12, 2015. The Cazadero FLCPA-05O will be offered in both 1300nm and 1700 nm wavelengths, and are specifically designed for deep tissue multiphoton microscopy applications.

Multiphoton microscopy includes a number of different methods for imaging tissue with very high spatial resolution. Ultrashort light pulses with high peak power can be used in a variety of nonlinear optical processes, typically involving multiphoton absorption in molecules and florescence. Calmar’s newest lasers offer high peak power femtosecond pulses, in the key wavelengths of interest. The fiber-based design offers the advantages of compact size, ease of positioning and use, high uptime, low cost, and are air cooled.
In a recent paper, “Recent advances in fibre lasers for nonlinear microscopy”, in outlining advantages of fiber-based femtosecond lasers over conventional Ti:Sapphire technology, C. Xu and F.W. Wise of the Xu Research Group of Cornell University’s School of Applied and Engineering Physics state:
“Ideal sources for deep-tissue MPM will deliver energetic (>>10 nJ) femtosecond pulses in the 1,300-nm or 1,700-nm window, with repetition rates matched to the imaging speed without causing excessive sample heating.”
Says Calmar Laser CEO Dr. Tony Lin, “We are excited about the new capabilities that these unique tools offer researchers. We already see them being used to push the boundaries of deep-tissue multiphoton imaging. The extremely high (MHz) repetition rates offer a big advantage over legacy Ti:Sapphire/OPA systems which typically operate around 40 kHz. This higher speed increases the total signal strength, and makes live video imaging possible. This is a very exciting time in deep tissue imaging research and the promise of improved diagnostics and treatment.”
A new white paper from Calmar, “Microscopy Applications Using Calmar Fiber-Based Femtosecond Lasers” can be downloaded for free at http://www.calmarlaser.com/microscopy. The new models can also be seen at BiOS booth #8712 on February 7-8, and Photonics West, booth #712 on February 10-12, 2015.
