MINNEAPOLIS, July 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BIO-key International, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: BKYI) , the leader in finger-based biometric identification and wireless public safety solutions, along with its integration partner Vanguard Systems International, has been awarded a contract to provide secure data access for a major healthcare system using advanced finger identification technology. BIO-key’s solution was selected over ones from five other vendors after extensive functional evaluations.
BIO-key’s WEB-key finger identification solution has been integrated into the McKesson Horizon Physician Portal, used by clinicians to access all hospital electronic records. The Vanguard system enables the hospital to comply with standards set forth by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). HIPAA requires, among other things, that healthcare providers create a privacy-conscious environment in which only medically relevant, non-public patient information is disclosed to authorized parties.
“In the past, our customer was hesitant to deploy finger authentication technology, as doctors would still be required to remember and enter a user ID before authenticating. They wanted a finger-only log-in process. BIO-key’s one-to-many identification solution and unmatched accuracy made this a reality,” said Guillermo Gomez, President and CEO of Vanguard Systems International. “WEB-key was easily integrated into the hospitals’ existing portal system, a process that was completed in a matter of days.”
BIO-key’s Oracle-based True User Identification(TM) technology will allow thousands of healthcare professionals at hundreds of locations secure access to confidential patient records with a simple finger scan. In addition, BIO- key’s device interoperability was critical to the customer, in that enrollment and heavily used stations utilize rugged Cross Match devices, while physician desktops use lower-cost ST Microelectronics readers.
“In addition to providing the level of security necessary to meet HIPAA requirements, the BIO-key solution satisfied another critical requirement: eliminating the need to issue and manage user IDs, passwords or cumbersome authentication tokens. This is one of those ideal situations where security has been significantly increased, the user experience is improved and product support costs are reduced,” said Mike DePasquale, CEO of BIO-key. “Security and convenience are key elements in the continued adoption of BIO-key’s solutions.”
