1. Singapore, 10 February 2014 - Airbus, one of the world’s leading aircraft developers and manufacturers, has come onboard as the newest member of Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) Aerospace Programme (AP). It joins fellow commercial aviation Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and major Singapore companies in aviation, who are members of the A*STAR AP.
2. The A*STAR AP was launched in 2007 as an initiative to work with the aviation industry in undertaking pre-competitive research work for its members. The AP fosters synergy through leveraging the broad and complex range of interest of its members for a sustainable future. As strategic technology partners with the A*STAR AP, aircraft manufacturers, engine and component OEMs and system providers can draw on the capabilities across A*STAR to meet key requirements for solutions in MRO and/or manufacturing.
3. To date, the consortium has commissioned more than 50 projects to meet the needs of AP members. The projects span the five key research thrusts of the programme, which are: advanced materials, manufacturing processes and automation, information and communication, inspection and non-destructive testing, and computational modelling and dynamics. R&D in these areas will enable faster turnaround time, develop new materials for airframes and engines for improved reliability and performance for the aviation industry.
4. The current members of the AP include leading commercial airliner manufacturers (Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier and Embraer); large engines manufacturers (GE, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce); components, systems and specialist material OEMs (Hexcel, Honeywell, Panasonic and SAFRAN); key players in aviation in Singapore (DSTA, SIA Engineering and ST Aerospace) and local SMEs such as Addvalue Technologies, Flight Focus and TruMarine.
5. “We at Airbus are pleased to join the Aerospace Programme focused on aviation research and lead by A*STAR,” said Mr. Axel Krein, Airbus SVP Research & Technology. “Singapore is already an important research partner for Airbus and this is a further step towards growing Airbus R&T footprint globally and in the fast growing Asian region.”
6. Mr. Tay Kok Khiang, Chairman of the A*STAR Aerospace Programme, said: “We welcome Airbus’s decision to join the A*STAR Aerospace Programme. With each new member, the Programme continues to grow in strength. The combined expertise of our members in commercial aviation is humbling and we look forward to how we can contribute to the future of aviation and the interests of each of our members.”
7. Singapore is the largest Manufacturing, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) hub for the aerospace industry in Asia Pacific, with about a quarter of the region’s market share for MRO activities [1] and a healthy and growing footprint of manufacturing investments.
