Paris, 19 June 2013 - The 12th World Congress of OESO will take place at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris from 27 to 30 August 2013. Sponsored by UNESCO, in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), some of the leading experts in the world will be in attendance. Clinicians, researchers, manufacturers, economists, representatives from NGOs and major oncology research centers will meet to develop an exhaustive list of 390 relevant questions on esophageal cancers during interactive sessions, special symposiums, and a series of general forums.
MIT Professor Andrew W. LO, who was named last year by TIME Magazine last year as one of the one hundred most influential people in the world, has been invited to present and discuss his provocative theory: "How financial engineering can cure cancer."
The OESO owes its originality to its interdisciplinary translational approach to a unique topic in upper gastrointestinal illnesses. This year, the theme is esophageal cancers (prevention, nutrition, diagnostics, treatments, etc.). Its unique format consists of bringing together many of the best oncology specialists in the world (clinicians, geneticists, researchers, representatives from learned societies and cancer treatment centers) to this major conference and suggests 390 topics on the theme chosen this year. Those topics will be discussed during the four-day conference in question-and-answer form, symposiums and a series of general forums covering fields in basic and clinical science.
Esophageal cancers
There were nearly 4,300 new cases of esophageal cancers estimated in France in 2011. Three quarters of them were in men, mostly around age 50 and older.[1] Worldwide, according to the GLOBOCAN database of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC-CIRC), esophageal cancer is the ninth most frequent cancer and the seventh most frequent cause of cancer deaths.
About the OESO World Congress
The first OESO World Congress was held in 1984, and subsequent congresses were held every three years, then every other year. As an exception to this rule, the 12th world congress will take place only one year after its predecessor, which was held in Como, Italy, from 1 to 4 September 2012. Each congress focussed on a condition of the esophagus and discussed a specific theme, which is dissected and treated using OSEO's unique multidisciplinary approach, which mainly takes the form of extremely specific questions whose answers have to be given in a maximum of five minutes. The corresponding texts are then transcribed into a volume that is currently published by the New York Academy of Sciences and accessible on PubMed. These sessions constitute an Encyclopedia of Esophagology that is updated using an original process developed by the OESO. These books are a library of particular interest to clinicians and academics: by randomly opening any of its volumes, they can find a summary response to a question that was answered by a top-ranking word specialist, or, on occasion, find the answer to a question they may not had in mind. About OESO
Since its creation in 1978 by Professor Robert Giuli, a member of the French National Academy of Surgery, OESO (Organisation mondiale d'Etudes Spécialisées sur les maladies de l'Oesophage, World Organization for Specialized Studies on Diseases of the Esophagus) is a multi-disciplinary association specializing in esophageal disorders with a presence in 85 countries. Its Permanent Scientific Committee has 80 members and includes some of the best specialists worldwide in 19 different disciplines, as well as 14,000 corresponding members. OESO enjoys the special patronage UNESCO, with a Resolution approved in 1999 at the General Conference of its 187 member states. The OESO Foundation, which is headquartered at the University Hospitals of Geneva, was created in 2001 for the promotion, in conformity with one of the missions of UNESCO, of OESO's activities in the field of telemedecine and the acquisition, updating and distribution of knowledge in each of the various branches of esophagology. In 2005, a UNESCO Telemedecine Chair for multidisciplinary distance learning and creation of evolutional content using the OESO network was created based on the OESO Foundation (Health Operating Polydisciplinary Expertise Services, HOPES).
