New $1.5 Billion Oslo Cancer Cluster Innovation Park Opens

Norway aims to build a European driving force for innovative cancer treatment

Oslo, Norway, 24 August: Prime Minister of Norway, Erna Solberg, today opened the Oslo Cancer Cluster Innovation Park. Representing a USD1.5 billion public-private investment, the Innovation Park brings together the research, healthcare and industry partners in the Oslo oncology value chain with the Ullern High School.

The vision of the Oslo Cancer Cluster Innovation Park is to create Europe’s leading environment for education, research and industry within oncology, while also shortening the time it takes to develop new cancer medication and diagnostics. The founder and driving force of the Oslo Cancer Cluster Innovation Park, Jónas Einarsson says:

“This unique project is built on both private and public enthusiasm and continues the long history of integrated and translational cancer research and treatment performed at the Norwegian Radium Hospital. The Innovation Park includes Ullern High School, The Cancer Registry of Norway, Oslo Cancer Cluster Incubator, and Institute for Medical Informatics and Pathology at Oslo University Hospital – as well as global biopharmaceutical and biotech companies.”

A total investment of USD 1.5 Billion from private and public sources

Purely focused on oncology and establishing an oncology Incubator, the Oslo Cancer Cluster Innovation Park will ensure that bright ideas in the lab benefit cancer patients faster than today.

The total investment in the building is on USD 1.5 billion; one fourth founded by Siva, the Norwegian state’s tool for developing new businesses and knowledge communities, and two-thirds private funding raised in collaboration by OBOS, Industrifinans, Radium Hospitalets Legater and Utstillingsplassen Eiendom.

“We are honoured to have Prime Minister Erna Solberg opening Oslo Cancer Cluster Innovation Park,“ says Arne Baumann, Chairman of the Board of the Innovation Park. “We look forward to showing everyone the uniqueness of this project. Oslo Cancer Cluster Innovation Park integrates education, excellent research and innovations. The Park will further strengthen the vibrant an innovative oncology biotech milieu in Norway. Oslo Cancer Cluster Innovation Park is definitely one of a kind.”

“The communities surrounding Oslo Cancer Cluster is capable of triggering substantial innovation and international economic growth. Bringing medical research quicker from lab to market also comes with the possibility of adding global social value, ” says Espen Susegg, President at Siva.

Integrated High School to inspire researchers of the future

Unlike other Innovation Parks, the Oslo Cancer Cluster Innovation Park will integrate a High School, namely Ullern High School. This will give the students at Ullern the opportunity to hear guest lectures from oncology researchers and industry leaders, do internships at Oslo University Hospital and the other members of Oslo Cancer Cluster. “In this way, we hope to inspire future generations of researchers,” says Einarsson. Ullern High School and Oslo Cancer Cluster started their collaboration in 2009 and is expanding it year.

History:

In early 2000, Jónas Einarsson, CEO at the Radium Hospital Research Foundation, and Kaare Norum, former principal of the University of Oslo, noted that a natural cluster for cancer research, development and innovation had emerged in the Oslo area. Together they established Oslo Cancer Cluster, a research and industry cluster sole focussed on cancer. They soon realized that the milieu needed a physical innovation center for collaboration, innovation and networking across disciplines. The idea of an innovation park was born, optimally placed right next to the Norwegian Radium Hospital and with Ullern High School as an integrated element to attract and develop new talents into cancer R&D and entrepreneurship.

“As a former principal with a lifelong interest in education, Kaare Norum came up with the idea to integrate Ullern High School,” says Einarsson. “Ullern and its principal at that time, Paal Riis, were very positive from day one, “Einarsson explains, “The collaboration started in 2009 and is expanding every year, and we look forward to being located in the same building.”
