Gyros AB Of Sweden Receives 2005 Laboratory Automation Excellence In Technology Of The Year Award

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Frost & Sullivan is proud to present Gyros AB, Sweden with the 2005 Laboratory Automation Excellence in Technology of the Year Award in recognition of its commitment toward technology innovation, which has resulted in the development of the high performance Gyrolab automated system.

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to a company that has pioneered the development and introduction of an innovative technology that has either impacted or has the potential to impact several market sectors. This Award recognizes a company's efforts toward developing cutting-edge technologies that are likely to make significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture.

"Gyrolab(TM) Workstation, an automated system, enables researchers to generate more information from fewer samples and improve lab performance by streamlining many steps of conventional applications into single and nanoliter scale procedures," explains Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst S. Ravi Shankar.

Gyrolab(TM) MALDI SP1 is a novel CD-based microfluidic platform that leverages the simplicity of CD mass production. Moreover, it overcomes the bottlenecks created during sample preparation by fully automating all steps from protein digestion to sample elution.

The CD microlaboratory contains 96 identical microstructures and uses a capillary force to load the sample into the microstructures. A spin program then ensures homogenous crystallization directly on the MALDI target area by balancing the rate of elution versus the rate of evaporation.

Gyros has also developed Gyrolab Bioaffy(R) CD microlaboratory that quantifies proteins in general research, process development, and quality control and shows immense potential for both molecular and normal diagnostics.

"The novelty of this technology compared to traditional microplate techniques lies in the fact that it requires only small volumes of both the sample as well as the reagent," observes Shankar. "This is a feature of great importance to researchers working with precious samples that are limited in quantity."

In addition, each microstructure consumes only 500 nanolitres of both the sample and reagent per data point. Since it cuts back on the consumption of costly reagents, Gyrolab Bioaffy reduces the cost per data point and the cross talk between individual microstructures.

Furthermore, automated Gyrolab Bioaffy significantly reduces the analysis time. For instance, it takes only 50 minutes for the CD to generate data, resulting in savings in assay development times, which can be dedicated toward higher-level tasks such as data analysis.

Besides Gyrolab MALDI SP1 and Gyrolab Bioaffy, Gyros has leveraged its strong technical expertise to develop Gyrolab MALDI IMAC1 that detects and verifies the presence of low-abundance phosphopeptides. The company's strong research and innovation base has also enabled it to build a robust IP portfolio that includes 70 patent families covering 80 inventions.

About Gyros

Gyros miniaturizes and integrates laboratory applications, enabling scientists to generate more information from less sample and to improve lab performance. Using our proprietary technology platform, we increase productivity by streamlining the many steps of conventional applications into single, nanoliter scale procedures. Optimal environments are created for each application. A Gyrolab microlaboratory, in the form of a compact disk, can process hundreds of samples in parallel, under the control of Gyrolab Workstation.

Our company will realize the full potential of the Gyros technology platform in the fields of drug discovery and diagnostics. Initial product offerings are focused towards the growing area of proteomics. Gyros has 65 employees working at its headquarters in Uppsala Science Park, Sweden and in sales offices in the USA and Europe.
