Australian Company, VibraQ Corporation Ltd Wins Gold Medal

Medical device developer VibraQ Corporation Ltd ("VibraQ") has won a Gold Medal in the Medical Surgical Orthopaedic division of the 33rd International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva for its Blood Platelet Agitation technology.

The exhibition is the largest of its kind in the world and attracts over 1,000 inventions from 42 countries and had a visitor attendance of over 70,000 people in April of this year. An international jury of 70 members awarded prizes for new technologies in different categories on the basis of commercial potential and innovative achievements.

The VibraQ Blood Platelet Agitator delivers dynamically variable motion with infinite control over patterns, acceleration rates, amplitude and frequency to optimise oxygen transfer and shear forces in the agitation of blood platelets.

The Australian Red Cross Blood Service has applied VibraQ's agitation technology to an extensive proof-of-application trial on "Blood Platelets in Storage". The research has indicated that VibraQ's advanced mechanostimulation technology has a major role to play in extending the shelf-life of blood platelets in storage.

VibraQ believes its unique planetary motion can improve the quality and potentially extend the shelf life of stored platelets beyond the current 5 day limit. This will have a dramatic impact in reducing losses in the blood banking industry. Currently around 15% of all platelets collected or 885,000 units per year are discarded due to the expiry of their 5 day shelf life.
