AIBioTech Reaches 20,000 Sample Milestone on Ion Torrent Personal Genome Machine

RICHMOND, VA- AIBioTech has reached the milestone of 20,000 DNA samples sequenced on its Ion Torrent Personal Genome Machines™ (PGM?) by Life Technologies. As an early adapter of this cutting edge technology, AIBioTech is one of the first companies to apply the Life Technologies Ion Torrent sequencing technology to the CLIA certified laboratory market place.
“The Ion Personal Genome Machines allow us to sequence DNA samples, quicker, cheaper and more accurate than with other technologies,” says Thomas Reynolds, AIBioTech executive vice president of science and technology. “We are able to sequence multiple mutations of several different genes from one DNA sample at the same time and that has drastically improved our efficiency, sample throughput and profitability,” Reynolds adds.
AIBioTech offers pharmacogenetic testing panels to physicians that identify patients’ phenotypes for the group of enzymes known as the Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes. In humans the CYP enzymes play an important role in activating or metabolizing many types of widely used drugs.
AIBioTech’s genetic tests categorize patients by metabolizer type and provide physicians with therapeutic recommendations in relation to the fields of cardiology, pain management, psychiatry and urology. It operates 32,000 square feet of laboratory space. Since its formation in 2009, it has grown to 137 employees and plans to add an additional 50 employees by the end of 2013.
