Silbaugh to Step Down as American College of Physician Executives CEO

TAMPA, Fla., March 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Barry Silbaugh, MD, CEO of the American College of Physician Executives, announced today that he will be stepping down at the end of this year.

Silbaugh, 63, will assist ACPE's Board of Directors in a national search for the next physician CEO. He has agreed to stay with the organization until the successor is in place. The search will begin in April.

During his nearly four years as the first physician CEO of the College, Silbaugh led staff efforts to introduce new curriculum, expand the use of social media, redesign ACPE's website and journal, and create a turn-key physician leadership development program for health care organizations. Silbaugh replaced ACPE founder Roger Schenke, who led the College for more than 30 years.

"Since I came on board in 2008, we've accomplished the strategic, operational, and financial goals we set when I accepted the position with the understanding that I'd be a transitional leader for the College," Silbaugh said. "With that work concluded, now it's time for the next phase of growth and leadership. Our Board and growing membership will continue to be a rich source of ideas and strategies for improving health care."

Silbaugh plans to work part-time in health care, while spending more time with family, friends, and multiple other interests, including international travel. He will continue in his role as vice chair of the National Patient Safety Foundation's Board of Governors when he leaves ACPE.
