FDA Advising To Fully Cook Green Onions, Suspected Source Of Virus Outbreak

The FDA is advising people to fully cook green onions to minimize the risk of contracting hepatitis A. Outbreaks of the virus associated with raw or undercooked green onions served in restaurants in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia occurred in September. More than 500 patrons of a single Chi-Chi's Mexican restaurant in Pennsylvania were infected with hepatitis A late last month and earlier this month. To date, three people have died, according to published reports. The source of the Pennsylvania outbreak is still unknown, but Chi-Chi's has removed green onions from all their restaurants as a precaution.
