HAMILTON, Ohio, May 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Butler County Board of Commissioners president Greg Jolivette announced today that Amylin Ohio LLC, a subsidiary of San Diego-based Amylin Pharmaceuticals, will expand construction at its manufacturing facility in West Chester, Ohio to increase investment to a total of approximately $400 million.
“This is a very important high technology investment for us,” he said. “It validates Butler County as a site for biotechnology manufacturing and the quality of our workforce. For the second time, Amylin has confirmed that they believe that we can provide them with the people that have the skill sets they require.”
Amylin is expanding its existing manufacturing facility at 8814 Trade Port Drive near the Union Center Boulevard district which is now in the process of being equipped to manufacture Amylin’s long-acting release (LAR) formulation of exenatide, a compound in development for type 2 diabetes.
“Amylin’s expanded manufacturing facility will create up to 500 jobs over the next three years,” said Commission vice president Mike Fox. “Butler County’s knowledge-based workforce continues to pay dividends in attracting high tech businesses and jobs.”
According to Butler County Commissioner Chuck Furmon, there are 775 bioscience entities in Ohio. The life sciences employ 586,288 people in Ohio with a payroll of $22 billion and $52 billion in economic output.
Exenatide LAR is being developed for once-weekly administration. BYETTA is the trade name for Amylin’s formulation of exenatide that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for twice-daily use by people with type 2 diabetes. Exenatide LAR has not yet been approved by the FDA for marketing in the United States.
The exenatide LAR development program is a collaboration among Amylin; Alkermes of Cambridge, Massachusetts, which also has a facility in Wilmington, Ohio; and Eli Lilly and Company of Indianapolis, Indiana.
