American College of Gastroenterology Debate Continues Over Colonoscopy Vs. Sigmoidoscopy

Smart Brief -- Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard for colorectal cancer detection but some researchers say the scientific evidence does not conclusively show that and there are cases in which a less costly and less invasive sigmoidoscopy may be just as good. The American College of Gastroenterology favors colonoscopy, but experts all agree either test is much better than no test at all. Dr. David Johnson, ACG past president said, “It would be a gross overreaction and inappropriate response to infer that colonoscopy does not provide a benefit.”
