Allied Minds Release: Federated Wireless Announces Upcoming Pilot Program For The Commercialization Of 3.5GHz Spectrum

Arlington, VA (May 12, 2015) — Federated Wireless, Inc., a subsidiary of Boston-based Allied Minds (LSE: ALM), today announced plans for a pilot program with several U.S. government agencies that aims to standardize and certify the dynamic sharing of 3.5GHz spectrum.

The program will begin in July and will be the first of several to take place at multiple locations throughout the United States. The goal of the program is to accelerate the standardization and certification of dynamic three-tier spectrum sharing, ultimately resulting in commercialization of the band. The program will expand over the summer to include commercial operators and several third-party application providers.

Spectrum sharing aims to create a balance between the low cost and versatility of unlicensed spectrum and the quality and predictability of licensed spectrum. Unlocking the 3.5GHz spectrum, nicknamed the “innovation band” by Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler, is expected to provide opportunities for innovating the way spectrum is licensed and accessed by a variety of users — and meet accelerating demand for broadband usage.

The recently issued FCC Report and Order for the 3.5GHz spectrum put into place a three-tiered sharing system that the agency expects to be enabled by a Spectrum Access System. Federated Wireless, which was an early advocate of a three-tiered system, is launching its own Dynamic Spectrum Access System that is designed to leverage a dedicated network of sensors, manage interference, optimize usage of spectrum resources, and provide an essential level of security for incumbent users of spectrum.

“This pilot program is designed to provide the shortest path to standardization and certification,” said Chief Executive Officer Iyad Tarazi. “We see significant momentum and common interest among all stakeholders to define, demonstrate, and implement spectrum sharing technology and we are committed to providing the technical leadership and support required.”
