WASHINGTON, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- It’s registration time for the 2006 Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation National Race for the Cure(R). The 17th annual Komen National Race will be held on Saturday, June 3rd on the National Mall. An expected 60,000 runners and walkers will gather to raise money and awareness to fight breast cancer, celebrate survivors and honor loved ones who lost their battle with breast cancer.
The Komen National Race is a 5K run/fitness walk to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research and local education, screening and treatment programs. This family-friendly event offers many exciting ways to support the fight against breast cancer:
* New this year, the Komen Kids for the Cure(R) Race gives kids ages 5-10 a fun new way to get involved. The Race will take place at the National Race Expo Kids for the Cure(R) area on Race Day morning. For kids 5 and under, the Kid’s Tent is back by popular demand with even more fun activities. * Participants of Sleep In for the Cure(R) can participate in the Komen National Race from the comfort of their own bed. Participants who choose to hit snooze on Race Day will receive a T-shirt, eye mask, special snooze Race bib and an official Race bib. * Form a team with family, friends or colleagues. Last year a record 1,067 teams helped make the Komen National Race even more fun. Learn about how you can earn team prizes at the team kick-off meeting April 19. The team sign-up form deadline is April 28.
By registering for the Komen National Race for the Cure(R) Washington D.C., area residents are making a direct contribution to their community. More than $1 million of the Komen National Race for the Cure(R) proceeds remain in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. community -- including Virginia and Maryland. Local donations provide funding for breast health and breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs for the medically underserved. The remaining net proceeds support cutting-edge breast cancer research through the Komen Foundation Award and Research Grant Program.
