Verathon Inc. Introduces Innovative GlideScope(R) Video Laryngoscope for Bariatric Patients, Enabling Quick Intubation

BOTHELL, Wash., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Verathon Inc. is pleased to introduce an innovative GlideScope(R) Video Laryngoscope designed specifically for bariatric use. The new reusable GlideScope(R) GVL(R) 5 intended for larger patients, offers a longer reach and unique shape, to aid in intubation of those adult patients with anatomical anomalies associated with a body mass index above 25. The GVL(R) 5 provides a clear, real-time view of the patient's airway, enabling quick intubation in the operating room (OR), the emergency department (ED) and the intensive care unit (ICU).

"With bariatric patients increasing in number, anesthesiologists are seeking tools that work specifically for airway difficulties seen with larger patients," said Dr. John Pacey, inventor of the GlideScope(R) and President of Verathon Medical(R) Canada ULC. "The new GVL(R) 5 was designed by the team at Verathon Medical(R) Canada specifically for some of these patient-related anatomical anomalies."

The GVL(R) 5 is designed for larger patients, in particular those with thick necks, excessive pharyngeal fat deposition, increased intra-abdominal pressure from omental and abdominal wall fat, and thickened inter-scapular and midline fat deposition. Anesthesiologists who work with larger patients appreciate the new device. "The blade works beautifully so far. I have done some large folks, with short necks. And it's really easy," stated Irene Osborn, MD, and Associate Professor - Anesthesiology, Associate Professor - Neurosurgery, Director of Neuroanesthesia at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, New York.

Designed for 1st Pass Success, the GlideScope(R) GVL(R) minimizes the need for "blind" intubation procedures and achieves a Cormack-Lehane Grade I or Grade II view 99 percent(1) of the time. The reusable GlideScope(R) system consists of: a non-glare color monitor, a choice of one of four sizes of a GVL(R) which houses a high-resolution camera with an anti-fogging mechanism to resist lens contamination, and an optional mobile stand, IV pole mount or hard shell case.
