Upsher-Smith Laboratories Introduces Nexa(TM) Select With More Plant-Based DHA Than Any Other Once-Daily Single Gel Capsule Rx Prenatal Vitamin

MAPLE GROVE, Minn., Feb. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Upsher-Smith Laboratories, Inc. announces the launch ofNexa Select Rx prenatal vitamin, the newest addition to the Nexa Prenatal Vitamin Family. Nexa Select contains plant-based DHA (325 mg) and Vitamin D3 (800 IU). Its advanced formulation offers more plant-based DHA than any other single gel capsule Rx prenatal vitamin taken once a day. Many experts recommend a DHA intake of at least 200 to 300 mg per day for women during pregnancy and lactation.

Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to become pregnant can feel confident that while taking a prenatal vitamin with plant-based DHA, they are avoiding the potential worry of exposure to oceanborne toxins, such as mercury or polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) compounds, and the fishy aftertaste or burp that may be associated with fish-based DHA.

“There is no more important time to eat a nutritious diet than during pregnancy. Even the most conscientious mothers-to-be can benefit from the added nutritional support that prenatal vitamins provide,” said Wesley Mark Todd, MD, Senior Director Medical Affairs, Upsher-Smith Laboratories, Inc. “While Nexa Select includes numerous vitamins and minerals to support a healthy pregnancy, the folic acid and plant-based DHA in a single capsule are especially appealing to many moms-to-be.”

Nexa Select also provides 800 IU of vitamin D3 an essential vitamin to support mom and baby’s skeletal health, 1.25 mg of folic acid and 29 mg of iron. It also contains other essential vitamins and minerals that are important for the overall health and well-being of mother and baby, including calcium and vitamins B6 and C -- as well as the gentle stool softener, docusate sodium, for added comfort.

About DHA

DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid, is a key omega-3 fatty acid that is associated with a host of health benefits for mothers and babies. It helps with the development of baby’s prenatal and postnatal brain and visual development. Some studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may promote a healthy duration of gestation and birth weight. Nexa Select contains plant-based life’sDHA which has been granted GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status by the FDA for use in infant formula.
