University of Pittsburgh Receives $10M Grant to Study Schizophrenia

Pittsburgh Business Times -- The University of Pittsburgh has received a $10 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to support the Conte Center for the Neuroscience of Mental Disorders.

The center will focus on developing new treatments for schizophrenia, a disease that affects over two million adults in the United States. The grant will help researchers better understand the disease and explore novel treatment options.

“Our goal is to understand how schizophrenia affects brain function, to identify new treatments and to develop better ways to assess the effectiveness of those treatments,” said Dr. David Lewis, director of CCNMD, in a prepared statement.

Schizophrenia’s symptoms include difficulty thinking logically and the inability to recognize and express emotions and interpret reality. The disease is a chronic condition, which can be managed medically.
