Two DMC Hospitals Ranked Among America’s Best

DETROIT, July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Two hospitals within the Detroit Medical Center are included in this year's U.S. News & World Report rankings of America's Best Hospitals. Children's Hospital of Michigan was recognized for pediatrics, and Harper University Hospital was recognized for Hutzel Women's Hospital's expertise in gynecology.

Of the 17 specialties evaluated by U.S. News, Children's Hospital of Michigan was the only hospital in Michigan to rank in pediatrics and Harper University Hospital, on behalf of Hutzel Women's Hospital, ranked among the top 50 in gynecology.

"The entire DMC team focuses on providing excellent care," said DMC CEO Mike Duggan. "It's rewarding to have Children's and Hutzel recognized nationally."

U.S. News uses several factors in determining the rankings, including reputation among board-certified physicians, mortality ratio, nursing care, medical technology, palliative care and discharge planning. The concept and design of the statistical model used for the rankings were created by the National Opinion Research Center -- a national organization for research at the University of Chicago.

U.S. News ranked Children's Hospital of Michigan (CHM) 27th in pediatrics.

"All of us at Children's are dedicated to taking care of kids. It's important to be acknowledged for our work," commented Larry E. Fleischmann, M.D, Children's Hospital of Michigan president. "We are honored to be in such good company on this list of prestigious children's hospitals."

Children's Hospital is Michigan's only free standing pediatric hospital and was recently ranked one of the nation's best children's hospitals by Child Magazine.

Harper University Hospital (HUH) was ranked 46th in gynecology because of the gynecological care provided by Hutzel Women's Hospital, which is located in the Harper Hospital building.

"We are extremely proud of our Hutzel physicians," said Iris Taylor, Ph.D., president of Harper University Hospital and Hutzel Women's Hospital. "The entire team of physicians and staff continually research and find new techniques and procedures to improve the care women in metro Detroit and beyond receive at Hutzel. It's gratifying to have our efforts recognized."

The medical staff of Hutzel Women's Hospital was also recently ranked first nationally in research awards by the National Institutes of Health.

U.S.News & World Report's "America's Best Hospitals" rankings for 2004 will be published in the July 12 issue of the magazine.
