Innovation is the introduction of new methods, processes and products. Without it, we wouldn’t be making calls on mobile phones, surfing the Internet, or even using a faucet to wash our hands. Innovation drives our world forward, and the companies included in Forbes’ recently published list of the most innovative have certainly made contributions to that end. Ranked according to “innovation premium,” a figure the authors determined by calculating the difference between market capitalization and net present cash flow, the list features many well-known pharmaceutical and biotechnology organizations.
14. Procter & Gamble
Headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, Procter & Gamble received an innovation premium rating of 33.7. The company enjoys $84.74 billion in annual sales, though their current 12-month sales data figure shows zero growth. Providing home and personal care products to consumers around the world, Procter & Gamble’s brands include Always, Crest and Oral-B. Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway recently purchased the Duracell brand for $4.7 billion.
13. AmerisourceBergen
Headquartered in Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania, AmerisourceBergen is a pharmaceutical services company that generates $96.08 billion in annual sales. It received a 36.5 innovation premium rating from Forbes, and its 12-month sales growth is 42.4 percent. AmerisourceBergen provides drug distribution and related services to customers including healthcare providers, pharmaceutical manufacturers and certain specialty drug patients.
12. Sun Pharma Industries
Headquartered in India, Sun Pharma Industries received an innovation premium rating of 38.3. The company generates $2.08 billion in annual sales, and it has seen 34.9 percent sales growth over the last 12 months. Billionaire Dilip Shanghvi, who owns 64 percent of Sun Pharma Industries, acquired its Delhi-headquartered rival, Ranbaxy Laboratories, for $4 billion last April.
11. Grifols
Headquartered in Barcelona, Spain, Grifols is a biotech company that enjoys 3.64 billion in annual sales. The organization received a 38.7 innovation premium rating from Forbes, and its 12-month sales growth is 10.7 percent. Applying sophisticated science and technology to create life-saving goods, Grifols’ offerings include products derived from human plasma, non-biological pharmaceutical products and medical supplies, and diagnostic testing equipment. 10. Perrigo
Headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, Perrigo received an innovation premium rating of 42.3. The pharmaceutical company generates $3.8 billion in annual sales, and it has realized 13.9 percent sales growth over the last 12 months. A global healthcare supplier, Perrigo develops, manufactures and distributes over-the-counter and prescription pharmaceuticals, nutritional products and active pharmaceutical ingredients.
9. Intuitive Surgical
Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, Intuitive Surgical is a medical equipment and supplies company that enjoys 2.27 billion in annual sales. The organization received a 42.4 innovation premium rating from Forbes, though its 12-month sales are actually down 12.2 percent. Intuitive Surgical develops, manufactures and markets da Vinci Surgical Systems and related instruments as well as various robotic technologies.
8. Novozymes
Headquartered in Bagsværd, Denmark, Novozymes received an innovation premium rating of 43.1. The biotech company generates $2.09 billion in annual sales, and it has seen 5.2 percent sales growth over the last 12 months. With over 700 products and 6,500 patents, Novozymes is dedicated to developing and manufacturing high quality, animal-free biological ingredients and technologies to help pharmaceutical and medical device companies improve their performance. 7. Illumina
Headquartered in San Diego, California, Illumina received an innovation premium rating of 43.7. The biotech company enjoys $1.42 billion in annual sales, and it has seen 26.8 percent sales growth over the last 12 months. Illumina develops, manufactures and markets life science tools and integrated systems for the analysis of genetic variation and function. The company’s customers include leading genomic research centers, academic institutions, government laboratories, clinical research organizations and pharmaceutical companies.
6. Coloplast
Headquartered in Humlebaek, Denmark, Coloplast is a medical equipment and supplies company that generates $2.11 billion in annual sales. It received a 49.6 innovation premium rating from Forbes, and its 12-month sales growth is 5.5 percent. Coloplast focuses on the development and marketing of medical healthcare products and services including those for wound and skin care, disposable surgical urology and surgical urology. 5. Vertex Pharmaceuticals
Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Vertex Pharmaceuticals received an innovation premium rating of 56.8. The biopharmaceutical company enjoys $1.21 billion in annual sales, though it has seen a 36.6 percent decline in sales over the last 12 months. In the business of discovering, developing and manufacturing small molecule drugs, Vertex Pharmaceuticals’ research includes cystic fibrosis, infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases and neurological disorders. 4. Aspen Pharmacare Holdings
Headquartered in Durban, South Africa, Aspen Pharmacare Holdings is a pharmaceutical company that generates $2.31 billion in annual sales. It received a 57.1 innovation premium rating from Forbes. Twelve-month sales growth data is not available. The company manufactures and supplies branded and generic pharmaceutical, healthcare and nutritional products including Altosec, Aspen Efavirenz, Augmentin, CiLift, Lamzid, Mybulen and Vectoryl.
3. BioMarin Pharmaceutical
Headquartered in San Rafael, California, BioMarin Pharmaceutical received an innovation premium rating of 58.9. The biopharmaceutical company has seen 12-month sales growth of 20.2 percent while developing and commercializing innovative pharmaceuticals for serious diseases and medical conditions. 2. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals
Headquartered in Tarrytown, New York, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals is a biopharmaceutical company that generates $2.11 billion in annual sales. It received a 64.7 innovation premium rating from Forbes (landing it in fifth place on the overall list), and has seen sales growth of 43.6 percent over the last 12 months. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals discovers, invents, develops and manufactures medicines for the treatment of serious medical conditions including diseases of the eye, colorectal cancer and a rare inflammatory condition. Product candidates in development address areas of high unmet-medical need including hypercholesterolemia, oncology, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and atopic dermatitis. See Regeneron Jobs Here.
1. Alexion Pharmaceuticals
Headquartered in Cheshire Connecticut, Alexion Pharmaceuticals received an innovation premium rating of 71.4, landing it at second place overall on the Forbes list. The biopharmaceutical company generates annual sales of $1.53 billion, and it has seen 12-month sales growth of 46.7 percent while innovating and developing life-transforming therapeutic products for patients with severe and ultra-rare disorders. The company focus includes the treatment of disease in the areas of hematology, nephrology, neurology, metabolic disorders, oncology and ophthalmology.
