Bar Harbor, Maine—The Jackson Laboratory’s plans to build an Institute for Genomic Medicine in Farmington, Conn., have progressed another step with the selection of The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company as the project’s construction management firm.
Operating from its New Haven, Conn., regional office, Whiting-Turner will manage the design development phase of the building project, on a 17-acre site near the University of Connecticut Health Center. Construction will begin on January 1, 2013, and the new facility will open in 2014.
The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine, a new nonprofit research institute for genomics-based medicine, will house 300 biomedical researchers, technicians and support staff in advanced computing facilities and laboratories.
In making the announcement, Jackson Senior Director of Facilities John Fitzpatrick said, “Whiting-Turner was the near unanimous choice amongst the selection team based on their proposed team, history of success, and cultural fit with The Jackson Laboratory.”
In February the Laboratory announced the institute’s architectural planning and design team of Centerbrook Architects and Planners of Centerbrook, Conn., and Tsoi/Kobus & Associates of Cambridge, Mass.
According to Fitzpatrick, the project is progressing through the schematic design phase and moving into design development. “Whiting-Turner’s addition to the team will allow us to proceed through the design development phase in an informed manner to maintain cost and schedule constraints and to maximize our value in the construction process,” he said.
The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution based in Bar Harbor, Maine, with a facility in Sacramento, Calif., an institute for genomic medicine planned in Farmington, Conn., and a total staff of about 1,400. Its mission is to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating and curing human disease, and to enable research and education for the global biomedical community.
