Takeda Supports UAE Vision 2021 Target Of Reducing Death Toll From Cardiovascular Diseases To 158.2 Per 100,000

Global pharmaceutical major says collaboration between private and public sectorscan help achieve UAE Vision 2021 healthcare goals

Dubai, UAE, 23 February 2015: Takeda Pharmaceuticals, a fast-growing, global research-driven healthcare company, has welcomed the UAE Vision 2021 target toreduce the number of deaths from cardiovascular diseases to 158.2 per 100,000.

The company, which has expanded its operations recently in the UAE, says this would bring the death toll from cardiovascular diseases below the global rates.

According to past statistics, the UAErecorded211 deaths per 100,000 in 2008 in this category, according to the World Health Organization report. The new UAE goal would achieve 25% lower than 2008, marking a significant achievement in the healthcare sector.

Ahdy El Sayes, Managing Director Middle East at Takeda Pharmaceuticals, says: “Cardiovascular diseases are the No. 1 cause of death in the UAE, with 30% of the total deaths. This is an alarming figure which UAE Vision 2021 seeks to put an end to. Even injuries, which a common cause of deaths worldwide, occupies a lower percentage of 23% than that of cardiovascular deaths.”

“Takeda has shifted focus on the Gulf region. We have deviseda new strategy to address the unmet medical needs through more focused R&D. In the UAE, we are allocating our resources to core therapeutic areas, especially the cardiovascular and metabolic.”

“The unique collaboration between private and public sectors can jointly help implementthe UAE Vision 2021. We are extremely confident that the approaches implemented would raise awareness among people and educate them on how to prevent and fight this disease.”

In general, the cause of most cardiovascular disease is a build-up of atheroma - a fatty deposit within the inside lining of arteries. There are lifestyle factors that can be controlled to reduce the risk of forming atheroma. These include not smoking; choosing healthy foods; a low salt intake; regular physical activity; keeping weight and waist size down.
