Synthon Pharmaceuticals is closing its Research Triangle Park facility, which employs 35 people, according to General Manager Wayne Brinster.
“We were really hoping to give employees here as much notice as possible, so the intent is to close down the facilities on August 31,” Brinster said.
The majority of the RTP operations will move to a partnering agency, Brinster said, although he would not disclose the name of that company. Some of the current workers likely will be retained by that partnering agency, said Brinster, who added that the decision to close the facility was just finalized and “not something we sat on.”
The move will help the company’s products be “more cost competitive.”
“Being a generic drug manufacturer, you’re always trying to achieve the best costs for our U.S. customers,” he said, adding that the move is about meeting market demands and not about overhead cost.
Synthon’s local operations include analytical labs and a packaging plant.
Synthon, a Netherlands-based company, has been working in biotechnology since 2007. Focus areas include multiple sclerosis and oncology.
According to its website, Synthon employs about 1,400 people at 11 sites worldwide.
