Smiths Medical, Inc. Launches Exclusive Distribution Of New Generation Carbon Dioxide Absorbent

CARLSBAD, Calif., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Smiths Medical, part of the global engineering business Smiths Group, announced today the launch of their exclusive distribution in the United States of a new carbon dioxide absorbent for delivery of anesthesia at low flow rates. Sodasorb(R) LF Carbon Dioxide Absorbent, manufactured by W. R. Grace & Co., is a new generation carbon dioxide absorbent that makes modern, closed-circuit low flow anesthesia techniques safer, more efficient, and cost effective.

Anesthesiologists, technicians, and medical facilities around the world are rapidly adopting more economical closed- and semi-closed low flow methods of administering inhalation anesthetic. Effective carbon dioxide absorption during this type of anesthesia delivery is critical in preventing problematic gaseous byproducts that may result. Featuring an original patented formulation that inhibits the degradation of anesthetic gases, the Sodasorb(R) LF Carbon Dioxide Absorbent eliminates the potential for those dangerous byproducts associated with absorbents under low flow rate conditions.

The Sodasorb(R) LF Carbon Dioxide Absorbent delivers all the efficiencies medical personnel have come to trust and expect from the original Sodasorb(R) Carbon Dioxide Absorbent. This new Sodasorb(R) LF Carbon Dioxide Absorbent is not only more efficient at carbon dioxide absorption at low flow rates; it also features a permanent color change from white to violet as the product is exhausted or in the event of desiccation, thus alerting users as to the appropriate time to change out the product.

“Sodasorb LF is a new absorbent designed to inhibit anesthetic breakdown (even when desiccated) without sacrificing carbon dioxide absorption efficacy. Sodasorb LF can absorb carbon dioxide as well as conventional absorbents, and resist degradation as well as absorbents lacking strong base,” said Dr. Harvey Woehlck, M.D., Professor of Anesthesia at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

“The permanent color change will enable you to manage your resources more intelligently,” said Dr. Franklin V. Cobos II, M.D., University of Nebraska Medical Center. “Current standard operating procedures dictate regular, scheduled change out of carbon dioxide absorbent and we have shown that product with as high as 70% useful life remaining is regularly disposed of. Sodasorb LF’s permanent color change indicates when the product is exhausted and enables you to get maximum use of your absorbent -- a cost-efficient feature that current generation absorbents do not provide.”
