The Maine Institute for Human Genetics and Health is shutting down the focal point of its biomedical research program operations in September, according to a report from the Bangor Daily News, which cited a lack of public and private funding leading to the decision. The expected end of the “centerpiece” of the research program will result in layoffs for 20 people, the report confirmed, citing an Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems official. The institute will, however, maintain a lab and keep equipment available for ongoing projects.
