Oral Contraceptives Linked to Higher Lupus Risk, McGill University Study

MedPage Today -- LITTLE FALLS, N.J., April 6 -- Use of oral contraceptives is associated with incident systemic lupus erythematosus, a case-control study showed. The risk was mostly limited to current users, those who had just started using contraception, and those using older first- and second-generation oral contraceptives instead of third-generation ones, Samy Suissa, Ph.D., of McGill University in Montreal, and colleagues reported in the April issue of Arthritis Care & Research.
