LAWRENCE, Mass., Jan. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- To coincide with the sixth anniversary of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, NxStage Medical, Inc. (Nasdaq: NXTM), a leading manufacturer of dialysis products, is recognizing the efforts of medical leaders and support teams in helping to save the lives of people suffering from acute kidney injury (AKI) after the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Immediately following the disaster, Brian Remillard, M.D., Section Chief of Nephrology and Hypertension at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) led a coordinated effort to bring the portable NxStage® System One to Haiti to provide on-site dialysis therapy to injured survivors. With support from NxStage, Remillard’s efforts have included emergency response following the earthquake, as well as long-term initiatives focused on improvements in renal care for patients in Haiti.
“I am committed as a doctor to providing care in the United States and in developing countries for both outpatient and acute inpatient dialysis,” said Dr. Remillard. “The System One is extremely portable, easy to use and exactly what we needed to treat AKI patients we found in Haiti.”
After the earthquake, Dr. Remillard partnered with Chief of Medicine Dr. Philip Cleophat at Partners in Health, a global health organization committed to improving the health of poor and marginalized people, to bring medical education and renal care to the hospital. Partners in Health worked for three years after the earthquake to build a 300-bed, state-of-the-art hospital, Hopital Universitaire de Mirebalais (HUM) with the goal of providing comprehensive medical care to residents of central Haiti, including advanced care for renal disease with the NxStage System One. In March of last year, NxStage provided System One training and education to nurses from the hospital.
“What Dr. Remillard and his team have done over the past six years is an inspiration,” said Joseph E. Turk, president of NxStage. “We are proud to have the System One playing an important role in treating patients in need in Haiti.”

About the NxStage System One
The System One is used to provide a range of flexible therapy options in hospitals and dialysis centers. The NxStage System One is also the first and only truly portable hemodialysis system cleared specifically by the FDA for home hemodialysis and home nocturnal hemodialysis. Its simplicity and revolutionary size (just over a foot tall) are intended to allow convenient use in patients’ homes and give patients the freedom to travel with their therapy. When combined with the NxStage PureFlow SL Dialysis Preparation System, patients are able to further simplify, using ordinary tap water to create dialysis fluid on demand. Unlike conventional hemodialysis systems, the System One requires no special infrastructure to operate. Under the guidance of their physician, patients can use the NxStage System One, with their trained partners, where, how and when it best meets their needs, including while they are sleeping - at home or on vacation and at a medically appropriate treatment frequency. In addition, NxStage’s Nx2Me Connected Health platform collects important NxStage System One and patient information for flexible viewing, monitoring and reporting that may improve patient management and simplify alternative site care. http://www.nxstage.com/.
