National Cancer Institute Revamps Clinical Trials Program; Plans to Merge the Nine Groups that Undertake Adult Cancer Studies into Four to Improve Design and Implementation of Trials

Advance Web -- The National Cancer Institute (NCI), a component of the Department of Health & Human Services, announced on Dec. 23 major changes to the Clinical Trials Cooperative Group Program that conducts many of the nationwide trials of new cancer therapies. In a major transformation, NCI said it will consolidate the nine groups that currently conduct trials in adult cancer patients into four state-of-the-art entities that will design and perform improved trials of cancer therapies. The changes are designed to provide greater benefits for cancer patients and more information for researchers.
