Montgomery College to Host 2012 Maryland Science Bowl

January 4, 2012 -- Montgomery College will host the 2012 Maryland High School Science Bowl Competition on Saturday, January 14, 2012. The winner of this regional competition advances to the 22nd Annual National Science Bowl Competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, April 26 to 30.

Interest in the Maryland Science Bowl has grown over the past two years, and organizers anticipate 24 teams participating in this year’s competition with representation from counties from across the state. The winner of the past three consecutive Maryland Regional Championships, Montgomery Blair High School, will also join the 2012 competition. Last year at the national competition, held in Washington, DC, Montgomery Blair’s science scholars advanced through six rounds of double elimination competition to face the undefeated Mira Loma High School of Sacramento, Calif., in the finals. After three rounds of competition, both teams were tied until the last question of the last match which Mira Loma answered correctly and won the competition. Montgomery Blair walked away with a second place award and national exposure for their school's science curriculum.

For the regional competition, preliminary rounds will be held in the morning and early afternoon in Montgomery College’s Science Center and Science West Building on the Rockville Campus. Semifinal and final matches will be held in the Theatre Arts Arena in the late afternoon.

Event organizers need volunteers to assist throughout the day in order to make the 2012 event as successful as past competitions. Volunteers with math and science backgrounds are especially welcome. However, those with experience in all disciplines and industries are encouraged to donate their time. Only a small number volunteer positions require a math and science skill set. Volunteer training sessions take place leading up to the competition.

Those interested in donating their time and encouraging students to pursue math and science must register online at:

Washington Gas and Green Clean LLC have provided grants to help support Montgomery College’s efforts in hosting the statewide Science Bowl competition. In addition to funding, Washington Gas will be sending more than 20 employee volunteers, including President and Chief Operating Officer Adrian P. Chapman, to volunteer as judges and timekeepers. Mr. Chapman will also provide opening remarks to the high school students participating in the 2012 competition.

Additional support for the Maryland Science Bowl is being provided by the College’s Office of Academic Initiatives and Montgomery College/Montgomery County Public Schools Partnerships.
