If Sanofi (SAN) wants a French person as its new chief executive officer, it may want to look beyond AstraZeneca Plc’s Pascal Soriot, because he said today he considers himself Australian. Sanofi approached Soriot about the job before it ousted CEO Chris Viehbacher last week, people with knowledge of the matter have said. The AstraZeneca chief wasn’t interested, they said. Still, analysts speculate Paris-based Sanofi will pursue Soriot or other French executives, after the board complained that relations with Viehbacher, a citizen of Canada and Germany, weren’t close enough. Viehbacher’s decision to move to the Boston area didn’t help, Sanofi’s board said.
