Medical Equipment Generates Millions Of Alerts, “Alarm Fatigue,” University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Reveals

Inundated by millions of alerts. It’s no wonder that clinicians suffer from “alarm fatigue,” the desensitization to the cacophony of beeps and noises associated with monitoring equipment. UCSF researchers found that the equipment generates more than 2.5 million alarms per month at UCSF’s five intensive-care units at its medical enter. This included nearly 1.2 million alarms from devices that monitor heart rhythm, 88 percent of which were determined to be false alarms caused by computer algorithm errors.
