A recent study was able to identify micro-RNAs that could be used to detect early bladder cancer. According to David J. McConkey, Ph.D., of MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, “The idea that the micro-RNAs identified in the paper could be used to detect bladder cancer early — irrespective of whether the disease is non-muscle-invasive or muscle-invasive — is very attractive, even though the cohort used in the paper was very small.” The team of researchers report that Analysis of micro-(mi)RNA expression in bladder tissue distinguished cancer from normal tissue with 100 percent accuracy in a small preliminary study.
