McCord Research Expands OliveNet™ Research Library

In an effort to assist scientists globally, McCord Research has continued to expand the OliveNet™ Library’s data related to the molecular structure of compounds found in olives.

CORALVILLE, Iowa, Jan. 24, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- In an effort to assist scientists globally, McCord Research has continued to expand the OliveNet™ Library’s data related to the molecular structure of compounds found in olives. “Institutions rarely share the wealth of their primary scientific data with other researchers. Our goal is to help accelerate research that can potentially improve the quality of life for patients due to important scientific discoveries,” stated Darlene McCord PhD, Chief Science Officer of McCord Research.

The library, which now features nearly 800 olive compounds allows scientists to understand the chemical properties of olive compounds in a way that they may not have known or realized previously. “Various olive compounds are of critical importance because they are potent antioxidants that are scientifically and clinically proven to prevent and treat major diseases like cancer and diabetes,” continued McCord.

Dimitrios Boskou PhD, an Emeritus Professor at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece is the Senior Advisor for the OliveNet™ Library website. His independent analyses have improved the quality and content of the library. Other website contributing scientists are providing ongoing input to the library which helps make the site so useful to other scientists.

The library was developed by a team of researchers at the McCord Research Center located within the Epigenomic Medicine Laboratory at Monash University and RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. Contributing scientists include Dr. Tom Karagiannis, Dr. Andrew Hung, Natalie Bonvino, Julia Liang, Elena Zafiris and Natalia Benetti. Other contributors include Dr. Nancy Ray and Angela Zhang from McCord Research located in Coralville Iowa.

Increasing evidence supports the idea that olive polyphenols are effective against several aging-associated or inflammatory diseases, including type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, stroke, cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. “The importance of including scientifically proven natural olive polyphenols, as part of a patient’s care plan, cannot be over estimated,” stated McCord.
