M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Receives Dwight D. Eisenhower Award For Excellence

HOUSTON, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center received the Small Business Administration's Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Excellence in Research and Development. This marks the first time a comprehensive cancer center has been honored with the Eisenhower Award. The award was presented to M. D. Anderson in Washington D.C. at the Procurement Award luncheon during Small Business Week.

The Eisenhower Award, which recognizes large prime contractors that have excelled in their use of small businesses as suppliers and subcontractors, is given annually in four categories including construction, research and development, services and manufacturing.

"Our institution's work is focused on patient care, research and cancer prevention, and we can achieve our goals and excellence in patient care only by working with the most talented and committed businesses available," said Paul Henry, Controller who accepted the award on behalf of M. D. Anderson. "We are honored to be receiving the Dwight D. Eisenhower Award and we remain committed to continuing to meet and exceed goals related to working with small businesses to achieve optimum results."

Extensive assistance provided to small business concerns through mentoring, pre-bid notifications for sub-contracting, training, economic opportunity forums, one-on-one vendor meetings and meeting contract small business concern goals were cited as key to M. D. Anderson winning the Eisenhower Award.

Launched in 1989, the State and Federal Small Business Program at M. D. Anderson has most recently been the recipient of the Premier Inc. "2005 National Award for Supplier Diversity" and the Women's Business Enterprise Alliance "Cutting Edge Award" for highest percentage of increase in dollars spent with Women Businesses in 2004. Consideration for the award includes maximum practical opportunity for small, small disadvantaged, veteran, service-disabled veteran, HUB Zone and women-owned small businesses.
