SAN FRANCISCO, March 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Johnson & Johnson today announced it is awarding a grant of $100,000 to the City of San Francisco for emergency preparedness, as the City readies for the San Francisco Rising 1906 Earthquake Centennial Commemoration on April 18.
Johnson & Johnson’s response to the 1906 tragedy is recorded in its Corporate history as the first major instance of disaster relief by the Company.* Contributions of surgical products and support of field hospitals around the city set into motion Johnson & Johnson’s 100-year legacy of disaster relief support and philanthropic outreach that continues today.
Sharon D’Agostino, Vice President, Corporate Contributions & Community Affairs for Johnson & Johnson, presented San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom with the Company’s cash grant of $100,000, to be utilized by the SF Fire Department’s NERT (Neighborhood Emergency Response Training) education program. She also presented the City with a Johnson & Johnson Disaster Relief Module, containing multiple cases of wound care and personal care products. The module, with a value of $20,000, will be available for use in training exercises and in the event of a potential future emergency.
This morning’s presentation occurred at the San Francisco Fire Department’s Headquarters. SF Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes-White joined the Mayor in representing the City of San Francisco.
“Johnson & Johnson is privileged to participate in next month’s remembrance and memorial activities in tribute to those who perished and survived the most tragic disaster of its time -- the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake,” said Ms. D’Agostino. “There is no more fitting way to recognize the 100th anniversary of Johnson & Johnson’s Corporate Contributions Program -- and the spirit of San Franciscans who faced the City’s tragedy a century ago -- than to renew our commitment to disaster preparedness in San Francisco, where our Company’s philanthropic tradition began.”
Mayor Gavin Newsom expressed his appreciation on behalf of the City.
“As we commemorate the events of 1906, celebrate the spirit of rebirth and revitalization, and educate the public about our ongoing need to prepare for emergencies, the city of San Francisco is pleased to acknowledge the major contributions of Johnson & Johnson -- both 100 years ago, and today,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom. “Johnson & Johnson responded to the catastrophic earthquake and fire in 1906 with a commitment of products and assistance in the most heavily damaged sections of the City -- a visionary example of compassion and corporate leadership. We’re also pleased that in 2006, Johnson & Johnson is renewing its commitment to philanthropy in San Francisco, where it all began.”
“This generous contribution will greatly support our city’s efforts to increase emergency preparedness training, education and awareness across San Francisco,” noted SF Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes-White.
