SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Invuity Inc., a pioneer in on-field surgical illumination, has appointed Philip Sawyer as the company’s new chief executive officer. Kenneth Trauner, M.D., co-founder and former CEO, will transition to the positions of chief scientific officer and chairman of the board of directors.
Sawyer brings to Invuity more than 20 years of senior management experience in the medical device sector. Most notably, he was co-founder and chief executive officer of Fusion Medical Technologies Inc., a leader in surgical sealants that became public and was later acquired by Baxter International Inc.
“Phil is an ideal pick for Invuity’s chief executive, as he has the proven ability to lead high-growth medical device companies,” said Dana Mead, partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and a board member of Invuity. “His considerable experience and strategic leadership skills will be important assets for the company moving forward, as it seeks to take advantage of key business opportunities and launch a series of new products.”
Invuity currently offers a range of proprietary illuminated surgical instruments that allow surgeons to direct uniform, efficient and highly targeted light within the surgical site, significantly enhancing their ability to navigate sensitive anatomy and treat complex pathology during minimally invasive procedures. The company expects to launch several new products for use in high-volume minimally invasive surgical applications in the near future.
“I join Invuity at a very important and exciting time,” said Sawyer. “I believe the company’s unique surgical illumination technology has the potential to transform the way minimally invasive surgical techniques are performed throughout the body, and I look forward to making this technology a staple in the surgical suite.”
