Intrexon Corporation’s AgBio Division Expands Its Operations

DURHAM, NC--(Marketwire - July 29, 2011) - Research Triangle Park, NC -- Intrexon Corporation, a next generation synthetic biology company, announced that its Agricultural Biotechnology (AgBio) Division has recently expanded to a new location in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The 28,000 square foot facility was recently occupied by Athenix Corporation, a Bayer CropScience company.

“This is a state-of-the-art facility that will allow us to accelerate our plant and mushroom research and development efforts,” stated Division President, Matthew Crisp. “It is substantially larger than the space we previously occupied and can accommodate our multi-year growth projections for both our lab and office needs.” Crisp also mentioned that as part of the move the division would eventually be taking possession of a greenhouse that is adjacent to the new property.

Intrexon launched its AgBio Division in February of this year and simultaneously announced the acquisition of Agarigen, Inc., a North Carolina-based company that had developed a novel, mushroom-based expression platform for the rapid, high yield production of recombinant proteins. The division was located in the smaller Agarigen facility before making the recent move. “Our staff size has increased significantly in the past six months and we were outgrowing our old space,” commented Don Walters, Ph.D., and Vice President of R&D for the division. “We have a number of job openings currently and expect to continue our hiring ramp for the foreseeable future. As Matt stated, the new space gives us ample room for that growth while also providing excellent lab configurations and capabilities for the many plant and mushroom studies we are conducting.”
