Grey Smith - real name Steve Hall - wasn’t always a full-time artist. Up until 2017, he was a counselor for Federal offenders, helping people overcome their personal traumas by owning their stories. Hall’s personal story paints a portrait of a man who survived addiction, sexual abuse, poverty, and years in correctional and psychiatric facilities. His experiences propelled him into a career dedicated to guiding others through the fog.

“It taught me so much and contributed a lot of insight into my own struggles and victories with mental illness, and it also imbued me with an enormous sense of compassion and connection with my brothers and sisters living with pain in their spirits,” Grey Smith said. He spent many years helping others until he realized it was time to, once again, focus on himself. He moved into an industrial warehouse in West Baltimore and began working on this self-produced record, lacing his story within the lyrics and arrangement. Every instrument plays a role. Every word has a purpose.

When asked if he’d return to being a therapist, he responds, “I don’t ever plan on going to back to treating patients. I feel that I am able to help people navigate their pain and emotions on a larger scale through Grey Smith. I hope to connect with people who have felt these things but have never found the words to explain their pain to the rest of the world.”
