Overview
Clinical research is a diverse and flourishing field that holds substantial opportunity. The pay scale is tempting and the flexible work schedule makes the competition for jobs fierce. Clinical research offers many specialty areas. Jobs in clinical research are extensive for medical professionals, project coordinators, scientists, sales support, technical types and those with legal experience.
Step 1
Volunteer on a clinical study to learn the basics, add to what you already know, learn new techniques or specialize in a specific area for a job opportunity. Even if you have experience in clinical research, more is better. Clinical trials often have plenty of room for interns or volunteers. As a side benefit, you will expand your professional network in the clinical research field and maybe even land a job.
Step 2
Complete or further your education with a science based degree. Consider a BS, MS or PhD in core sciences (biology, chemistry) as well as derivative sciences (physiology, microbiology, genetics). Fellowships and internships will also round out your education and make you a more appealing job candidate.
Step 3
Certify as a clinical research associate. Depending on the position, an advanced degree or certification may be required. Although not mandatory for all trials, this extra credential can mean the difference between landing the job or being passed over.
Step 4
Search for clinical trials that are ongoing or about to commence. Consider private industry, medical schools and universities, hospitals and government sponsored projects when searching for a job in clinical research. Contact the principal investigator or study sponsor, explain your interest and knowledge of their study and how you could strengthen their study with your services.
Step 5
Make connections with scientists and physicians. The old adage “it’s who you know” is alive and well in clinical research. By asking around you may be able to find job prospects before they hit the market.
