GENE PHARMACEUTIALS, LLC has submitted a patent applicaton for a sunscreen aimed at promoting, not blocking as with current sunscreens, vitamin D production by the skin. Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide health problem and is now recognized as being pandemic. Sun exposure in moderation is the major source of vitamin D for most humans. Recent evidence suggests that vitamin D plays a vital role in maintaining innate immunity, and has been implicated in the prevention of certain disease states including infection, autoimmune diseases (multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis), some forms of cancer (breast, ovarian, colorectal, prostate), and type 2 diabetes.
