Frost & Sullivan Recognizes U-Systems for Innovation in the Development of Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) Technology

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- U-Systems, the leader in automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) technology, today announced that it has received the 2011 North American Innovation Award in Automated Breast Ultrasound Technology from Frost & Sullivan in recognition of the company’s pioneering development of the somo•v® Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) system.

According to Frost & Sullivan, when compared to other solutions in the competitive landscape, the somo•v ABUS has the potential to be used as the superior breast cancer screening technology. Poor diagnostic rates of breast cancer with mammography in women with dense breasts and the need to reduce radiation exposure have created the need for a safe and effective alternative. U-Systems’ somo•v ABUS system, along with the new reverse curve transducer technology, has the potential to emerge as a life saving diagnostic aid that enables physicians to effectively diagnose breast cancers missed by mammography.

“Recognizing excellence in the development of the somo•v ABUS system, Frost & Sullivan highlighted that the technology has emerged as a fast, cost-effective, patient-friendly choice for breast scans,” said Ron Ho, president and CEO of U-Systems. “We are proud to be recognized for our somo•v ABUS technology as this continues to validate the need for new approaches to improve early detection in women with dense breasts. We have dedicated significant resources to develop the somo•v ABUS system as well as establishing a solid scientific basis for the use of ABUS as a cancer screening tool for women with dense breast tissue.”

The somo•v ABUS system is cleared by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for adjunctive diagnostic use with mammography and is the only ultrasound device approved for breast cancer screening in Canada and the European Union. The somo•v ABUS system uses proprietary technology to automate the breast ultrasound imaging process. The somo•v ABUS is the only ultrasound system designed specifically for a high-volume, screening environment.

About U-Systems

A leader in automated breast ultrasound technology, U-Systems is establishing the standard for breast ultrasound screening as the sponsor of the SOMO•INSIGHT multi-center study. Designed to determine the sensitivity of mammography and somo•v Automated Breast Ultrasound Systems (ABUS) together, compared to mammography alone for women with greater than 50% dense breast tissue, the Study will enroll up to 20,000 women at clinical study sites in the U.S. The U-Systems’ somo•v Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) system and somo•viewer Advanced 3D Workstation are cleared under 510(k) for diagnostic use as an adjunct to mammography.
