January 28, 2013 -- Bar Harbor, Maine -- Jackson Laboratory President and CEO Edison Liu, M.D., will kick off the Laboratory's free, monthly public lecture series on Thursday, Jan. 31. The talks, held fireside in Roscoe's, the Laboratory's dining facility, are an opportunity to hear how the nonprofit biomedical research institution is impacting science, the future of human health and our community.

Edison T. Liu, M.D., President and CEO

Dr. Liu is an international leader in cancer biology, genomics, human genetics and molecular epidemiology. As he guides the Laboratory in this new era of genomic medicine, a commitment to education will also be a major focus. Dr. Liu will be sharing his experience from his education and career path, and what it has taught him about life.

Changing the Future of Healthcare

What will the future of healthcare look like? In what ways are we able to increase the human health span? In this vein, Dr. Gareth Howell and Dr. Ron Korstanje and are doing important research into diseases of aging. Dr. Howell is studying age-related neurodegenerative diseases, focusing on Alzheimer's disease, non-Alzheimer's dementia and glaucoma. Dr. Korstanje is exploring risk factors in kidney and cardiovascular disease.

The Business of JAX: Economic Impact on the Community

The Jackson Laboratory is the largest employer in Hancock County and ranked among the state's largest employers. Approximately 90 percent of its revenue comes from out of state and 83 percent of its budgeted funds are spent in state; the estimated direct and indirect economic impact within Maine is about a quarter of a billion dollars annually. Charles E. Hewett, Ph.D., executive vice president, and John Fitzpatrick, senior director, Facilities Services, will discuss the Laboratory's impact on the local economy, as well as its global position in biomedical research.

The Arts and the Science: The Essence of Humanity

Dr. Liu is many things: a leader, a scientist and also an accomplished jazz pianist. In his words, "I am very fond of advancing the art-science convergence." He will be sharing these ideas amidst an exhibition of other local artists from within and outside the Laboratory.

The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution and National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center with more than 1,400 employees. Headquartered in Bar Harbor, Maine, it has a facility in Sacramento, Calif., and a new institute for genomic medicine in Farmington, Conn. Its mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health.
